“A new relationship is emerging between the real and the virtual, the artificial and the natural, the mental and the material.”
What future means might we encounter to re-think the paradigm of communications technology? As it rapidly develops and we simultaneously evolve in order to maintain demands on time, space and presence, is there a design approach or solution that might encompass those expansive technologies with our most primal senses, thus enabling a real state of connectivity?
Context:
Information technology is having profound impact on society and its rapid adoption is changing the way we socialize and connect. It is now possible to be constantly connected and present in different spaces at the same time. What this place/space does to make us realise our connection potential and our passive uptake of its conveniences, is an important probe into communications technology. Reduced to symbolic gestures and apparitions, our everyday connections have replaced our face to face other, thus reducing interactions to categorised happenings that follow a prescribed format – often not ours but that belonging to an existing interface. We are indeed in the process of exponential development – socially, cognitively and physically, and symptomatic to these changes is the evolution of our senses, our ability to adapt, morph and respond to change. Research to understand this paradigm shift has revealed a real need to re-address the balance between primal human emotion/interactions and our need to function within the framework of our complex globalized world.
