The Plasmorph – Living Information
Commission for Nissan – Sustainability for Mobility and Connectivity 2010-2100
Mobility is changing from mechanical to informational. Imagine a device that connects directly to your nervous system. The semi living helps modern nomads to easily ingest anything they need to know in an instant without having to process it. It senses your interests and builds up your experience and your memories. A living diary that provides customised information.
The Context
Mobility has evolved from the ability to move ones physical location to the instantaneous accessibility of information. Computational devices are increasingly intertwined with our fast-paced lives, allowing us to be fully connected, and informed. As a result we deeply depend on them. However those devices are not yet intuitive and immediate enough. We need to search, read and process information before we are able to act on it.
The Plasmorph
The device is a semi-living synthetically grown organism that functions as an external organ to the user’s body. The soft interface is a hybrid made from organic as well as synthetic mass and extends the human mind to a collective knowledge base. The device feeds on information and grows in relation to the quantity, and significance, of the user’s experiences. The Plasmorph is a living diary that provides customised information in an instant.
The Connection
The device plugs directly into the central nervous system of the user and the connection is achieved by converting nerve impulses from the brain into electrical signals that are understood by the Plasmorph. This communication works both ways and ensures that both entities can send, as well as receive, impulses.
The Relationship
The plasmorph develops a close, interdependent relationship with its user. The system recognises the presence of the Plasmorph and accepts it as a natural extension of the body and mind. The device, lead by its programmed instincts, responds instantly to its hosts every need. It is a symbiotic relationship that is built upon an intimate interaction and the exchange of information.
